Academic Course Sequence

6th Grade

Reading Workshop

Focusing on reading volume, stamina, and self-monitoring. Units include Character Analysis, Social Issues Book Clubs, Nonfiction Synthesis, and Fantasy literature.

Writing Workshop

Writers master Persuasive Essays, Realistic Fiction, and Literary Critiques. Students focus on claim organization, narrative scenes, and historical research reports.

7th Grade

Reading Workshop

Readers build independent literacy through collaboration. Emphasis is placed on authorial craft, character development, and universal themes about humanity.

Writing Workshop

Units cover Argumentative Essays on urgent global issues, Perspective Journals, and a unique Pre-BAT project analyzing stereotypes in popular culture.

8th Grade

Reading Workshop

Exploring Archetypes, Allusions, and deep thematic connections. Students read closely for evidence-based analysis across diverse text sets.

Writing Workshop

Focusing on Journalistic Articles, Literary Critiques, and Advocacy. Students take positions on reallife issues like child soldiers and video game ethics.

High School Excellence

9th Grade: Identity & Belonging

Bringing new students up to speed with the workshop model. Capitalizing on middle school development to explore complex literary questions.

What is identity? How do identities define where we belong?

10th Grade: Power, Gender & Love

Preparing for the Common Core English Regents. Students master writing from sources and text analysis while exploring societal experiences.

How is power gained and justified? How does gender affect identity?

11th Grade: Ambition & Rebellion

Selection between English 11 and AP Language & Composition. Culminates in the commencement-level PBAT and oral defense for graduation.

What drives success? When is rebellion or violence ever justified?

12th Grade: College Readiness

Options include AP Literature, AP Language, Ethnic Studies, and African Diasporic Literature. Students work independently with minimal scaffolds to reach college benchmarks.
